Mbarara District

Mbarara is the major administrative and commercial centre of the Ankore sub-region in western Uganda.

Mbarara University of Science and Technology - MUST located in Mbarara town was the second public university to be established in Uganda. It remains one of the best especially in the medical and education specialties.

Mbarara is the home district of outspoken women rights advocate and politician Miria Matembe. Mrs. Matembe was the district woman member of parliament (2001-2006) and minister of ethics and integrity until 2003.

Mbarara is also home for another distinguished woman, Eng. Winnie Byanyima the executive director of British charity Oxfam International who was a member of parliament of Mbarara Municipality from 1996 to 2001 and 2001 till 2004 when she resigned and quit politics.

Mbarara district borders Ibanda to the north, Kiruhura to the east, Isingiro to the southeast, Ntungamo to the southwest, Sheema to the west and Buhweju to the northwest.

District Headquarters: Mbarara, 290 kilometres southwest of Kampala.
