Rukungiri is in the Kigezi sub-region in western Uganda. It is the home district of opposition party Forum for Democratic Change - FDC's first president and leading opposition politician, Retired Colonel Dr. Kizza Besigye. Dr. Besigye is a presidential candidate (in the 2016 elections) for the fouth time since 2001.

Other notable figures from Rukungiri include Rujumbura county member of parliament and minister of information and national guidance, Retired Major General Jim Muhwezi as well as deceased minister of internal affairs, Retired General Aronda Nyakairima who was at the time of his death also one of the UPDF members of parliament.
Kisizi Hospital, a private hospital administered by the
Church of Uganda is found in this district.
Rukungiri borders Rubirizi to the north, Mitooma to
the east, Ntungamo to the southeast, Kabale to the south,
Kanungu to the west, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the
northwest.
