Moroto District

Moroto is the major administrative and commercial centre in the Karamoja sub-region and lies on the foot of Mt. Moroto and borders the Republic of Kenya which lies to the east.

It borders Kaabong to the north, Amudat to the south, Nakapiripirit to the southwest, Napak to the west and Kotido to the northwest.

District Headquarters: Moroto, 210 kilometres northeast of Mbale.

The Uganda People's Defence Forces - UPDF 4th Division offices and barracks are in Moroto near the town.

Until the mid 2000s the district like most of Karamoja was known for fierce cattle rustling an this led to insecurity especially to the neighboring cattle keeping communities in Teso.

The area has over fifty different minerals and precious stones most notably gold, silver, copper, iron, titanium and manganese.
