Kanungu District

Kanungu District is home for 2016 independent presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi who is also the member of parliament for Kinkiizi West constituency (2011-2016) in the district.


Mr. Mbabazi is the former prime minister and secretary general of the ruling National Resistance Movement - NRM.

Businessman James Musinguzi Garuga, the proprietor of Kayonza tea factory also hails from Kanungu as well as state minister for Health Dr. Chris Baryomunsi the member of parliament for Kinkiizi East constituency. and 

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park the home to Mountain Gorillas is found in Kanungu district which is also known for among other things, the 1998 massacre of hundreds in a religious cult led by a one Kibwetere.

Kanungu borders Rukungiri to the north and east, Kabale to the southeast, Kisoro to the southwest and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west.

District Headquarters: Kanungu, 60 kilometres northwest of Kabale and 420 kilometres southwest of Kampala.
