Until recently the area was plagued by persistent insecurity due to cattle rustling by ethnic groups from Karamoja in North Eastern Uganda and the Turkana and Pokot from neighbouring Kenya.
It borders Amudat district to the north, and Kween District to the west and northwest. The Republic of Kenya lies to the east and south
